Lusaka, Zambia – The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, has called on the Zambia Police Service to adequately prepare for the upcoming 2026 General Election to ensure the maintenance of law and order during the crucial period.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with the Zambia Police Service Command in Lusaka, Mr. Mwiimbu emphasized the importance of strategic readiness in preventing and addressing electoral malpractices and maintaining public safety. He urged the Police Command to enhance their operational capabilities and adopt measures that will ensure the election process proceeds peacefully and securely.
“It is essential that the Zambia Police Service is fully prepared to manage any challenges that may arise during the 2026 General Election. Law and order are paramount to the credibility of the electoral process, and this responsibility lies heavily on the police force,” he stated.
The Minister also reiterated the Presidential directive concerning the treatment of suspects in custody, calling on the Police Command to comply with the mandate against over-detaining individuals. He highlighted that suspects charged with bondable offenses should be granted bond unless they have a history of repeated offenses.
“The directive from His Excellency, the President, is clear: over-detaining suspects is unacceptable. Those eligible for bond must be bonded unless they are proven habitual offenders. This is a matter of human rights and procedural fairness,” Mr. Mwiimbu noted.
The meeting served as a platform to address critical issues affecting the Zambia Police Service, including improving internal accountability, operational efficiency, and adherence to professional standards. Mr. Mwiimbu expressed confidence in the ability of the Police Command to rise to the occasion and deliver on their mandate.
The Zambia Police Service, in a statement following the meeting, affirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. The command pledged to implement the Minister’s directives and work collaboratively with other stakeholders to guarantee a peaceful election process.
As the country prepares for the 2026 General Election, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Zambia Police Service are expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring a fair, safe, and transparent electoral process. Citizens and stakeholders will be watching closely as preparations unfold in the coming months.
