Lusaka, Zambia – Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA), located in the Chongwe District approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Lusaka, is the largest and busiest airport in Zambia. Named after Zambia’s first president, Kenneth Kaunda, the airport serves as a vital hub for both domestic and international flights.
Opened in 1967 as Lusaka International Airport, KKIA underwent a significant expansion and modernization project starting in 2015. The project, funded by a $360 million loan from the Exim Bank of China, aimed to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and capacity. The new terminal, Terminal Two, was officially opened in August 2021, featuring six gates, 22 check-in counters, 12 border channels, and six security check counters.
KKIA boasts two terminals: Terminal One for domestic flights and Terminal Two for international flights. The airport can handle up to 6 million passengers annually and serves as a hub for airlines such as Zambia Airways, Proflight Zambia, Royal Zambian Airlines, and Mahogany Air. The airport also offers various ground transportation options, including taxis, car rentals from Avis and Europcar, and shuttle services from local hotels.
Due to its central location, KKIA is strategically positioned as a hub in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The airport’s modern facilities and efficient operations make it an ideal gateway for tourists, business travelers, and cargo shipments. The friendly and stable socioeconomic climate of Lusaka further enhances its appeal as a destination for investment, tourism, conferencing, and trade.
With ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and services, KKIA is poised to continue its growth and play a crucial role in Zambia’s development. The airport’s expansion project has already increased its capacity and improved passenger experience, setting the stage for future advancements and increased connectivity.
Kenneth Kaunda International Airport stands as a testament to Zambia’s commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure and promoting economic growth. As the gateway to the country, KKIA welcomes travelers from around the world, offering a seamless and efficient travel experience.
