In a significant political development, Kasote Sigogo, Vice President of the Party for National Unity and Progress (PNUP), has resigned from both his position and the party. This decision comes in the wake of PNUP President Highvie Hamududu’s announcement of support for President Hakainde Hichilema in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Speaking at the Chabuka Ne Sandula traditional ceremony in Mansa district on Sunday, Mr. Hamududu lauded President Hichilema’s economic policies, crediting his leadership with Zambia’s transformative growth. “Reviving mines, boosting industrial production, and enhancing agriculture are driving economic recovery. Coupled with fiscal discipline, these measures are setting the stage for a reduced cost of living,” Hamududu remarked.
Mr. Sigogo, however, expressed his disagreement with this endorsement and announced his resignation. He stated that he would distance himself from the UPND Alliance, opposing Mr. Hamududu’s decision. “I cannot support this direction. My principles and vision for Zambia’s future differ significantly from those of the UPND Alliance,” Sigogo declared.
The resignation of Mr. Sigogo marks a notable shift within the PNUP, highlighting internal divisions over the party’s future direction and alliances. As the political landscape in Zambia continues to evolve, the impact of this resignation on the PNUP and its supporters remains to be seen.
