Dr. Kelvin Kamayoyo who is also Technical Advisor for African Rivers and former 2022 Western Province Tourism, Trade & lnvestment Expo Advisor has added a passionate voice on the importance of safeguarding water bodies and Kambule Stream included, if Africa is to enjoy steady economic development anchored on her abundant natural resources. Arguably, life depends on rivers and water is life, therefore rivers and streams are crucial to the survival of human beings, economies and animals, alike.
Notwithstanding, rivers and streams are intertwined and if harnessed well could help boost tourism exponentially, stimulate broadbased economic activities and improve biodiversity around the riverine villages or residential areas. Kambule Stream has rich history that has not been widely exhibited out there especially within the context of tourism promotion and cultural heritage prestigious. Kambule Stream could be utilised for movie production and the local people can benefit especially the youths and women who can be recruited into movie role auditions and film casting.
Undeniably time is now to conserve these natural resources which are right in our midst because electing the contrary would only pave way for occurrences of human undesirable activities such as pollution and unplanned infrastructure development capable of causing ecological imbalance. As human beings, we have a natural responsibility to takecare of the environment including safeguarding the health of rivers and streams, and therefore Kambule Stream ought to be accorded the care it deserves like yesterday.
We need to improve the health of our rivers, streams and lakes including restoring our floodplains across the continent of Africa. These water bodies in other places across the globe are a source of peace, opportunities and freedoms. Therefore, the source of Kambule stream urgently need to be protected and its pathway cleared to allow free flow of water and improve biodiversity. There is need to also construct appropriate crossing bridges to prevent people from unilaterally creating unplanned passages.
lt would be good to start seeing Kambule Stream featuring as one of the tourism sites to be visited by tourists and other interested personalities during the Kuomboka Ceremony. Further, there is need to erect some sign posts at the source of Kambule Stream so that the place is sufficiently protected and also rollout community radio sensitisation programmes on the importance of safeguarding rivers and streams including responsible use of water. ln addition, musicians from Western Province could also start singing about Kambule Stream showcasing it’s rich history and value to the economy of the province including narrating its interconnectedness with the Zambezi River.
