Nakonde Constituency Member of Parliament, Lukas Simumba has strongly condemned the Nakonde Council’s decision to terminate the contracts of over 80 workers which effects October 1, 2024.
Mr. Simumba says that the termination wasn’t due to unforeseen financial circumstances, but rather because of unnecessary hiring by management members, who allegedly employed relatives and friends for general worker positions, leading to overemployment.
The lawmaker adds that the move by the authority is welcome has most of the contracts did not benefit the locals.
Some stakeholders also condemned the move, calling it an assassination of government efforts to reduce unemployment.
The Nakonde Council, however, cites unforeseen financial difficulties as the reason for the termination, with Chairperson Nathan Musingwa Siame stating that the move aims to normalize contracts.
The termination, which affects 85 general workers whose contracts were initially set to end in 2026 has sparked outrage and fear of the economic repercussions.
Some affected former employess have raised concern about the council’s handling of the situation, including lack of transparency, unfair termination, and procedural irregularities.
