In a significant development for the textile industry in Zambia, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, officially received the inaugural shipment of manufacturing equipment intended for the revitalization of the long-defunct Mulungushi Textiles, now rebranded as Zambia China Mulungushi Textiles (ZCMT), located in Kabwe.
During the ceremony, Hon. Mulenga urged local farmers in Central Province and neighboring regions to increase their cotton production, assuring them of a reliable buyer for their crops.
He emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing the value of raw materials like cotton, expressing optimism about the future production of locally made fabrics, including the popular chitenge material.
The minister highlighted that the operational launch of ZCMT, anticipated by the end of this year, is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities, thereby revitalizing the once-thriving town of Kabwe, which has faced economic challenges since the original Mulungushi Textiles ceased operations in January 2007.
