In a bold statement, Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri has announced an anticipated increase in asset forfeiture actions, even in cases where individuals are prosecuted for corruption-related offenses, despite facing criticism regarding this practice.

Mr. Phiri emphasized that his office is committed to pursuing the forfeiture of assets following the conclusion of all corruption cases, underscoring his strong belief in reclaiming the proceeds of crime.

He pointed out that the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act is specifically designed for this purpose, highlighting that certain provisions within the law permit non-conviction forfeitures.

Phiri has urged critics of asset forfeiture to engage with lawmakers to amend the legislation if they believe it is flawed.

Furthermore, he has refuted claims that asset forfeiture has exacerbated corruption among authorities, asserting that robust safeguards are embedded within the country’s legal framework to prevent such issues.
