In a recent development, the Kawambwa Magistrate’s Court has handed down a five-year prison sentence with hard labor to Kawambwa Patriotic Front Member of Parliament Nickson Chilangwa for his involvement in malicious damage to property.
Additionally, Pambashe Lawmaker Ronald Chotela has been found guilty of arson in the same case, but his sentencing will take place at the High Court due to the severity of the offense, which falls outside the jurisdiction of a magistrate.
Furthermore, Kawambwa Town Council chairperson Kalumba Chifumbe has also been convicted of malicious damage to property in connection with the incident. Magistrate Martin Namushi sentenced him to five years in prison for his role in the crime.
The charges against Mr. Chilangwa and others included arson, threatening violence, malicious damage to property, and assault. They were accused of assaulting members of the United Party for National Development (UPND), damaging a vehicle’s windscreen, setting it on fire, and making violent threats on August 12, 2021.
