In a significant development aimed at tackling the severe drought affecting parts of Zambia, the Cabinet has taken a decisive step by implementing budget cuts across various ministries. These cuts will see a reduction of 30 to 35 percent in their allocations. The Minister of Finance and National Planning, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, made this announcement during an interview on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Sunday Interview program.

Dr. Musokotwane stressed the importance of Zambia demonstrating solidarity and self-sacrifice as it seeks international assistance. He stated, “As the international community supports Zambia, we also have to show that we are making sacrifices to be able to feed our unfortunate citizens who are faced with this hunger. We have to make that sacrifice. That is why Cabinet has allowed most ministerial budgets – not all – to cut them by an average of 30 to 35 percent.”

These budget cuts will result in the elimination of certain ministerial activities, allowing resources to be reallocated towards drought relief efforts. The aim is to provide immediate support to those affected by food shortages caused by the prolonged dry spell.

Dr. Musokotwane’s announcement highlights the government’s commitment to addressing the urgent needs of communities impacted by the drought, while also considering the national financial constraints. This initiative demonstrates a strategic approach to ensure that essential resources are directed towards mitigating the crisis and supporting vulnerable populations during this challenging period.
