Mine Worker Unions are calling on Vedanta Resources to utilize the remaining two weeks before the official handover of Konkola Copper Mines-KCM- by the government to prepare the promised incentives for immediate distribution.
President of the National Union for Miners and Allied Workers-NUMAW- Saul Simujika has stated that the workers are anticipating receiving their K2500 one-time payment and a 20 percent salary increase by the conclusion of July 2024.
Mr. Simujika expressed confidence in the completion of the process by the end of June 2024, in line with the government’s commitment, highlighting the positive response received during the two creditors’ meetings regarding the scheme of arrangements.
Speaking to Melo News, he mentioned that the necessary documents have been submitted to the courts and the nine-day review period has passed, making June 30 a feasible date for the handover of KCM to Vedanta.
Additionally, Mr. Simujika noted that the major obstacles have been resolved, and the workers are eagerly anticipating the rejuvenation of the asset to enhance productivity.
