The Nexus Energy-Water for Zambia (NEWZA) Project has received a significant boost with a commitment of 118.1 million Euros from the European Union and the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).
This project aims to address the pressing challenges related to water supply, sanitation, and hygiene in both urban and rural areas of Zambia. During the signing ceremony in Lusaka, Joe Kalusa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, emphasized the importance of this support, particularly in light of the country’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change.
Kalusa also highlighted that the assistance provided by NEWZA will contribute to the establishment of a favorable policy and regulatory environment for the water sector.
Claudio Bacigalupi, the Head of Cooperation Delegation to Zambia and COMESA for the European Union, stressed the need to improve the efficiency of the system and ensure its sustainability.
Anne Roeske, the Deputy Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy in Zambia, added that the project, which will span 36 months, will also focus on the maintenance of existing infrastructure.
This collaboration between the European Union, GIZ, and Zambia is a crucial step towards addressing the water-related challenges faced by the country and ensuring a better future for its citizens.
