The Zambia Meteorological Department has issued a warning to individuals who utilize water transport and engage in fishing activities to avoid water bodies throughout the current week. This caution comes after the department previously released an advisory indicating that certain regions of the country would experience intense winds, particularly over water bodies.
Senior meteorologist Peggy Thole from the department highlighted that the upcoming week will witness a notable decrease in temperature alongside an escalation in wind speeds, particularly affecting the Eastern and Southern regions of Zambia. Thole further mentioned that the meteorological team observed an uptick in wind speed and the presence of cloudy weather conditions in various provinces including Eastern, Muchinga, Luapula, Northern, Lusaka, Central, and parts of Southern provinces.
The cold weather conditions were attributed to the airflow originating from the south-east, which is a cold region, consequently influencing the airflow patterns in the affected areas. Thole emphasized the importance of adhering to the department’s advice for water transport users and fishers, urging them to await clearance before resuming their activities in order to safeguard lives.
Thole explicitly stated, “We have a warning for the transport users and fisheries. Starting from today (Sunday) until Saturday, we anticipate strong winds and low temperatures. It is advisable to stay away or take necessary precautions. Given that the winds tend to intensify over water bodies, it is prudent to halt water-related activities such as transportation and fishing. Resumption should only occur once we observe a change in weather conditions.”
