Lusaka, June 2, 2024 — Acting Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Ambrose Lufuma, MP, issued a press statement last evening, providing updates on the situation concerning Honourable Jay Banda and a political rally by the opposition New Heritage Party (NHP) in Mandevu Constituency.
HON. JAY BANDA’S SITUATION:
Honourable Jay Banda, recently discharged from Maina Soko Medical Centre on May 31, 2024, was invited to the Zambia Police Service Headquarters for an interview regarding his disappearance on May 25, 2024. During the interview, conducted in the presence of his legal counsel, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota, Honourable Banda was unable to provide any information about his disappearance.
Following the interview, Banda was escorted to the police station for other ongoing investigations related to alleged offences of attempted murder and assault from 2016 in Vumbwi, Eastern Province. During the booking process, Banda developed a medical condition requiring immediate admission to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Minister Lufuma emphasized that Honourable Banda has not been formally charged for the alleged offences, and investigations are ongoing. The government assures that due process is being followed and that Banda’s medical and legal rights are being respected.
POLITICAL RALLY IN MANDEVU CONSTITUENCY:
In a separate update, Minister Lufuma addressed the situation at Chipata Football Grounds in Mandevu Constituency, where the NHP had planned a political rally on June 1, 2024. The party had been advised against holding the rally due to security concerns. Despite this advice, NHP attempted to proceed with the event, prompting the deployment of police personnel to maintain public order.
At around 11:00 hours, a misunderstanding occurred when an individual approached the football grounds and was confronted by a uniformed officer. This led to a false impression among others that their colleague had been arrested, resulting in a march towards the football grounds. The police intervened and advised the individuals to return to Chipata Compound. No serious incidents were reported.
Minister Lufuma reiterated that while the Zambia Police Service supports the democratic rights of political parties and citizens to assemble and express their views, such activities must adhere to the law. Any actions that endanger public safety or disrupt societal harmony will be subject to regulatory measures.
The Zambia Police Service remains vigilant and committed to maintaining public safety and upholding the law. Political parties and their supporters are urged to respect the law and cooperate with law enforcement authorities to ensure peace and order within the community.
