Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati has appealed to the Industrial Training Center (ITC) to effectively increase its enrolment and train more youths in operating heavy duty equipment.
Mr.Mutati says in the past two years, over 600 heavy duty equipment have been bought under the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) countrywide and they need competent drivers to operate them
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from Transaid, a United Kingdom based organisation which supports ITC with equipment,Mr. Mutati said the heavy equipment bought by cities and town councils need competent operators to drive the for development to be accelerated.
He said government is investing alot in road safety to ensure the drivers and travelling public arrive safely at home.
“The recently launched construction of the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway is one way Zambia is working to promote road safety.
Mr. Mutati called on the Industrial Training Center to ensure it trains students who will competently work on the road and promote road safety.
“Driver training must emphasize on safety and save lives on the road,”he said.
And Transaid Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Caroline Barber disclosed that the organisation will deliver two more trucks to the Industrial Training Center next year to help it train more drivers
Ms. Barber said Transaid wants to continue partnering with ITC because it priorities road safety.
