Today, the government officially launched the Nkandanzovu Solar Mini-Grid project in Kalomo District, Southern Province, with a total cost of K4.13 million. This project, overseen by the Rural Electrification Authority, involved the installation of a 34 Kilowatts power Solar System to provide electricity to local Primary and Secondary Schools, a Rural Health Centre, a Market, and the surrounding community, benefiting over 23,000 individuals.
During the commissioning ceremony in Kalomo District, Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Yolanta Mutyambe highlighted that the Nkandanzovu project, which began in 2023, showcases the government’s dedication to exploring and investing in alternative renewable energy sources beyond hydro power. This initiative signifies a step towards sustainable energy solutions for the region.
Eng. Alex Mbumba, the Director of Engineering Services at the Rural Electrification Authority, announced that the Authority plans to undertake 143 projects this year, allocating K92 million specifically for 17 solar mini grid projects. This commitment reflects the ongoing efforts to expand access to electricity in rural areas and improve the quality of life for residents.
Dudumwenzi Member of Parliament Edgar Sing’ombe expressed his appreciation for the government’s fulfillment of a long-awaited promise to the people of Nkandanzovu, who have been without electricity for an extended period. The completion of the Nkandanzovu Solar Mini-Grid project marks a significant milestone in enhancing the livelihoods and opportunities for the local community.
