The British High Commissioner to Zambia, Nicholas Woolley, expressed his admiration for Zambia Sugar PLC’s ability to adapt and innovate in the face of climate change.
During a recent visit to the plant, High Commissioner Woolley commended the company for its efficient use of new irrigation technology, which has allowed them to continue their business operations effectively.
He highlighted the company’s self-sufficiency in the value chain, emphasizing that they grow their own cane and process it locally, ensuring that no jobs are outsourced.
This not only benefits the local community but also contributes to the country’s economy, with Zambia Sugar generating approximately US$200 million in export income annually.
Oswald Magwenzi, the Managing Director of Zambia Sugar PLC, acknowledged the challenges posed by the current drought and power crisis on smallholder cane growers.
However, he remained optimistic about the company’s future, citing its consistent profitability and commitment to preserving jobs for its 7,200 direct employees.
