Two former officials of the Monze Town Council, Benson Bweenje and Maybin Choongo, have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for their alleged involvement in a conflict of interest.
The ACC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Timothy Moono, stated that Bweenje and Choongo failed to disclose their personal interest in Plot 271 Sinaluchaba Road in Monze while serving in public office.
Investigations revealed that they had purchased the plot from Boyd Chongo Mwanakambowe in 2018 and 2019 respectively. It is alleged that they then requested Mwanakambowe to apply for subdivision and a change of land use for commercial development, which was ultimately approved by the council.
Bweenje is facing charges of Conflict of Interest under Section 28 (2) of Act No. 3 of 2012, while Choongo is charged under Paragraph 6 (1) and (7) of the Third Schedule of the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019.
Both individuals have been released on bond and are expected to appear in court on May 10, 2024.
