Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, has revealed that collaboration with the ministries of Home Affairs and Defence is underway to tackle the widespread issue of illegal mining in the country.
Dr. Kabeta emphasizes that the government is aware of the involvement of dishonest individuals who are encouraging ordinary citizens to engage in illegal mining practices.
Furthermore, Dr. Kabeta points out that this collaboration has exacerbated the problem, resulting in substantial financial losses for the government.
He also highlights that illegal mining not only undermines regulatory frameworks but also poses a threat to environmental sustainability and community well-being. Therefore, the government is committed to strengthening enforcement measures, improving surveillance, and deterring illicit activities in the mining sector.
Dr. Kabeta expresses confidence that through collective efforts, Zambia can address the challenges associated with illegal mining and fully harness the potential of its mineral resources.
