The Community Action against Corruption-CAAC is calling on the government to take decisive action against the criminal activities exposed in the auditor general’s report. The report, covering the financial years from 2006 to 2022, has uncovered significant financial discrepancies and irregularities, including conflicting figures, overpricing, and weaknesses in debt management.
One of the most notable discrepancies involves a contract for the supply of school requisites between the Ministry of Health and Mikalile Trading Company, amounting to a total of $402 million. The report reveals that the contract was overpriced by $60 million, with an additional interest of $78 million inflated to $138 million.
In response to these revelations, Brighton Tembo, the CEO of CAAC, emphasizes that the audit report clearly exposes the corrupt activities of the previous regime and how they abused external debt for personal gain. He stresses that if the business entities claiming government indebtedness decide to take legal action, the government must promptly initiate court proceedings.
It is crucial for the government to address these issues and hold those responsible accountable. The CAAC urges the government to take swift and decisive action to combat corruption and ensure transparency in financial matters. Only by doing so can we restore trust and integrity in our governance system.
