The Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati, announced that the laboratory analysis results showed that the Uranium levels supplied to employees at Barrack Lumwana Mining Company were below the safety threshold set by the International Atomic Energy Agency Standards.
Speaking to the press in Lusaka, Mr. Mutati emphasized that the water provided to the workers did not pose any health risks to them or the environment.
Last year, Barrick Lumwana reported to the Radiation Protection Authority about the high uranium levels in the drinking water supplied to a section of the mine employees, prompting them to stop the water supply and find alternative sources for the workers.
Mr. Mutati mentioned that a team from the Radiation Protection Authority and the National Institute of Science and Industrial Research visited the mine to collect samples for further analysis to assess the radiological risks.
Moving forward, the ministry plans to conduct regular environmental monitoring and awareness programs at Barrick Lumwana Mine to ensure the safety of the workers, the public, and the environment by preventing any harmful effects from exposure to ionizing radiation.
