The Zambian government has expressed its concern over the underutilization of the extractive industry despite its potential to significantly boost economic growth in the country.
During the South-South Cooperation and Knowledge Sharing Forum held in Lusaka, the Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the mining sector in order to unlock its economic value.
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration between stakeholders and the government, Dr. Kabeta stressed the need to address challenges comprehensively to ensure that the benefits of mining are fairly distributed and make a meaningful contribution to national development.
Additionally, at the same event, the UNDP Zambia Resident Representative, represented by UNDP Official Greg Saili, pointed out that the increasing demand for critical minerals presents an opportunity for Zambia to harness the mining boom for sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
