The President of the United Health and Allied Workers of Zambia, Daniel Mwimbe, has revealed that the toxic Benylin pediatric cough syrup, which has been in circulation for the past three years, is set to expire this month and is currently unavailable in most pharmacies.
The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has taken action by initiating a recall of the specific batch of Benylin pediatric cough syrup, urging all pharmaceutical outlets and health facilities to thoroughly check their inventory and isolate the affected batch.
Mr. Mwimbe expressed his disappointment with ZAMRA for only recalling the toxic syrup after three years of it being on the market, raising concerns about the potential harm caused to individuals who may have unknowingly consumed the product containing high levels of Diethylene Glycol, which can lead to severe injuries or even death, particularly in children.
In light of this situation, Mr. Mwimbe has proposed that the government supports the establishment of local manufacturing industries for medicines to ensure the safety of the population and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
