Local suppliers and contractors praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his efforts in unlocking the mining sector, providing them with opportunities to work with the right partners.
The commendation was expressed during a meeting between the suppliers, contractors, and President Hichilema in Mufulira, as reported by ZANIS.
Elias Mununga, a representative of the suppliers and contractors, highlighted the positive impact of operationalizing large mines on their businesses, expressing gratitude for the support received from the government.
While appreciating the progress made, Mununga also urged the government to ensure that foreign-owned mines engage Zambian suppliers and contractors to further enhance local participation in the sector.
President Hichilema emphasized his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the country’s economy, aiming to attract both local and foreign investments to create more opportunities for suppliers and contractors.
Hichilema encouraged local suppliers and contractors to actively pursue tenders with major mines, promoting unity and a change in business culture among them.
The President also advised against unnecessary legal disputes, urging suppliers and contractors to seek amicable solutions outside the courtroom.
Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry Chipoka Mulenga reiterated the government’s dedication to economic development through private sector involvement, emphasizing the importance of Zambians being integrated into the mining value chain.
Mulenga disclosed plans to establish a local content policy by the end of the month, aimed at fostering valuable business opportunities for local suppliers and contractors within the mining sector.
