Zambia’s Copperbelt Province is set to experience a major economic boost as Shaft 28 at the Luanshya Copper Mine is finally being dewatered.

President Hakainde Hichilema officially inaugurated the project, marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s relationship with China.

The President highlighted that the mine, which has been inactive for almost twenty years, is expected to create more than 3,000 job opportunities for the residents of Luanshya. He emphasized the project’s potential to revive the local economy, stating that it will provide capital for small businesses and open up numerous business prospects.

The revival of Luanshya as a prominent mining center seems imminent. President Hichilema also emphasized the project’s contribution to Zambia’s copper production target, stating that the extraction of 40,000 tonnes of copper is a significant step towards the country’s goal of producing 3 million tonnes.

The dewatering process utilizes advanced technology, including a state-of-the-art pumping system capable of relocating a staggering 170 million cubic liters of water to the Kafue River.

China Non-Ferrous Metals Corporation (CNMC) has pledged a US$500 million investment for the project’s overhaul. Dewatering is the first phase, with underground mining set to commence thereafter.

Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe highlighted the wide-ranging benefits of the project, stating that it will not only benefit the mining sector but also various other sectors. He credited the stable policies of the UPND government for attracting such a significant investment.

Kabuswe also pointed out that the high-capacity pumping system, which removes 400,000 cubic meters of water daily, presents additional opportunities.

The excess water can be utilized for electricity generation and agricultural activities such as fish farming.

The rejuvenation of Shaft 28 brings a ray of hope to Luanshya and the Copperbelt region.

This project not only guarantees the creation of employment opportunities and a boost to the mining sector, but it also aims to breathe new life into the local economy.

Additionally, it seeks to empower residents across different industries, providing them with the means to thrive and contribute to the growth of their community.
