This morning, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed a delegation led by Dr. Najat Maala, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, at State House.
During the meeting, President Hichilema discussed the urgent issues that children face today, such as child trafficking, smuggling, and the involuntary detention of children when their mothers are imprisoned. The government, in collaboration with its partners, is fully committed to addressing these challenges.
In response, President Hichilema’s government has implemented laws to support child protection and well-being. This includes investing in social welfare programs and providing free education and school feeding initiatives to encourage longer school attendance.
While recognizing the negative impact of child labor, the President emphasized the importance of instilling a work culture during the formative years. This is crucial for the development of character and acquisition of skills among children. To achieve this, the government will intensify efforts in early childhood skills development, President Hichilema stated.
