Zesco Limited, a power utility company, is planning to expand its operations by delving into geothermal power generation to cater to the growing electricity demand in Zambia and the wider southern African region.
According to Zesco’s Managing Director, Victor Mapani, geothermal energy is an untapped resource in the country despite its capability to lessen the dependence on conventional methods of generating electricity.
Mr. Mapani elaborates that by utilizing geothermal power production, which involves harnessing the earth’s natural heat to create electricity, Zesco will be able to broaden the range of energy sources available in Zambia.
He highlights that geothermal energy is both environmentally friendly and sustainable, making it an appealing choice for nations looking to decrease carbon emissions and combat the effects of climate change.
The Managing Director of Zesco further emphasizes that tapping into Zambia’s geothermal potential will not only enhance the country’s energy self-sufficiency but also help in addressing issues related to climate change that have resulted in intermittent power deficits.
