The Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia (PTAZ) has expressed disappointment with the performance of the sector in the first quarter of 2024.
According to PTAZ General Secretary Benson Tembo, this underperformance can be attributed to the government’s failure to fully implement certain regulations and policies.
Specifically, the government has not enforced Statutory Instrument-SI number 35 of 2021, which mandates that 50 percent of cargo haulage should be designated for local transporters.
As a result, foreign transporters continue to dominate the sector, negatively impacting local businesses.
Mr. Tembo emphasizes the need for the government to prioritize Zambians by promoting enhanced local content in contracts and supplies across various sectors, even as foreign direct investment is encouraged.
