On the 23rd of March 2024, the Embassy of Zambia in Paris actively participated in the commemoration of the Southern Africa Liberation Day, alongside other Diplomatic Missions representing the Member Countries of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This significant event took place at the Embassy of Angola in France, where a remarkable fusion of African flavors and captivating cultural performances were showcased, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration.

The Southern Africa Liberation Day holds great historical importance, as it was established following the SADC Summit Heads of State and Government in August 2018. This day serves as a tribute to the triumph of the People’s Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola, who received support from the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia and the Cuban Revolutionary Forces. Together, they valiantly fought against the armed forces of the Apartheid regime of South Africa during the intense battle of Cuito Cuavanale in the Kubanho Province of Angola, which remains one of the most fiercely fought conventional battles in African history, dating back 36 years.

The battle of Cuito Cuavanale concluded on the 23rd of March, 1988, marking a significant turning point in the fight against apartheid. This momentous event symbolized the downfall of the oppressive Apartheid regime and paved the way for the liberation of not only Namibia and South Africa but the entire Southern Africa region. The commemoration of the Southern Africa Liberation Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and justice, and it stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Southern Africa.
