The government has advised Zesco to reconsider the current eight-hour daily load-shedding schedule in order to minimize the duration of power outages and facilitate business operations. Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa disclosed that a ministerial committee led by Vice-President Mutale Nalumango convened over the weekend to discuss the matter.
During an interview on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview program, Mweetwa emphasized that the committee is particularly interested in reducing the number of hours allocated for load-shedding. He mentioned that the Ministry of Energy will be actively involved in engaging with Zesco in the coming days to explore options for restructuring the current eight-hour timeframe.
Mweetwa highlighted the concerns raised by citizens regarding the impact of daytime load-shedding on various businesses such as metal fabricators, restaurants, salons, and barbershops. He pointed out that the current schedule disrupts normal business operations and urged Zesco to devise a more business-friendly approach to load-shedding, especially considering the challenges faced by daytime workers.
