Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced that two roads in Zambia will undergo a name change to honor former presidents Hage Geingob and Sam Nujoma.
During Geingob’s memorial service in Windhoek, Hichilema expressed solidarity with Namibians in mourning the loss of Geingob.
Hichilema highlighted the shared memories and leadership of Geingob in the region, emphasizing the importance of commemorating his legacy through the renaming of a significant road in Zambia.
Additionally, another road will be renamed after Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, recognizing his influential role in the region.
Hichilema personally acknowledged the impact of Nujoma’s leadership, mentioning his own experience benefiting from the programs initiated by the former president.
Reflecting on Geingob’s leadership within the Southern African Development Community, Hichilema praised his consistent guidance and statesmanship.
He also commended Geingob’s contributions to the academic community at the University of Zambia, underscoring his lasting influence on the country.
Hichilema, who was a student during Geingob’s tenure as a scholar at the university, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness his mentor’s dedication to education.
Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs Frans Kapofi extended appreciation to the Zambian president for the symbolic gesture of renaming the roads, acknowledging the significance of honoring the legacies of Geingob and Nujoma.
