The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has taken strong measures to enforce the ban on the sale and distribution of bulk opaque beer, as stated in Statutory Instrument (SI) 23 of 2012 and SI 72 of 2012.
This move follows the successful implementation of similar laws in neighboring countries like Malawi and Zimbabwe. To ensure compliance, the LCC has deployed state and council police, as well as health officers, who have been actively enforcing the SIs since last Thursday.
Victor Kagoli, the director of public health at LCC, emphasized the seriousness of the issue and stated that the enforcement of these SIs is now a top priority for the local authority.
He acknowledged that there had been a delay in taking action but assured the public that the enforcement is now being carried out rigorously to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera.
