According to Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa, there has been a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of his statements. He clarifies that he was taken out of context regarding the alleged collaboration between the UPND and former Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili. Mweetwa emphasizes that he was misquoted in relation to the issue of tribal remarks aimed at de-campaigning Former President Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front (PF).
Mr. Mweetwa has become embroiled in a whirlwind of media attention following his alleged comments insinuating that the UPND had conspired with Mr. Kambwili to orchestrate tribal remarks aimed at undermining former President Lungu and the PF in the run-up to the 2021 general election.
In a recent telephone interview on Phoenix FM’s Breakfast Show, Mr. Mweetwa clarified that his previous comments had been misunderstood and misrepresented. He emphasized that his intention was never to imply any formal agreement or collaboration between the UPND and Mr. Kambwili. Mr. Mweetwa expressed his concern about the comments being taken out of context and reiterated that he holds no such insinuations.
In his statement, Mr. Mweetwa explains that his primary objective was to draw attention to the consequences of Kambwili’s actions and divisive comments, which unintentionally had a negative effect on the PF. At the same time, he also wanted to recognize the UPND’s individual endeavors in their quest to overthrow the previous ruling party.
The recent statements made by Mr. Mweetwa regarding the alleged sponsorship of tribal remarks by the UPND to Mr. Kambwili have been strongly condemned by the Citizens first party, who have labeled them as both criminal and serious.
In light of recent events, Party Spokesperson Frank Sichone has emphasized the importance of not repeating the error of electing leaders who propagate tribalism. This call comes as a confirmation from the Chief Government Spokesperson, further solidifying the need for Zambians to be cautious in their voting decisions. Sichone’s plea serves as a reminder to the public to prioritize unity and inclusivity over divisive ideologies, ensuring a harmonious and progressive future for the nation.
