Newly inaugurated president Nangolo Mbumba has emphasized that he will only serve the remainder of his predecessor, Hage Geingob’s term.
This declaration was made by Mbumba following his official swearing-in ceremony as Namibia’s fourth president, where he was accompanied by the newly appointed vice president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The unfortunate passing of Geingob occurred at 00h04 yesterday, after a courageous battle with cancer and undergoing experimental treatment in the United States.
In order to ensure a seamless transition of leadership, Mbumba took the oath of office more than 12 hours later, guaranteeing the continuity of the country’s administration. Addressing concerns about his tenure, Mbumba assured the public that he will not be seeking re-election, urging them not to worry or panic about his future political plans.
Mbumba expressed his thoughts and shared his memories of working with Geingob, emphasizing their long-standing relationship and understanding. He mentioned meeting Geingob in New York in 1967, where Geingob was already a leader and representative of the students.
Mbumba also mentioned working in Geingob’s office when they returned to Namibia. He accepted his current role with humility and acknowledged the significance of the assignment.
With a deep understanding of the immense responsibility that comes with this significant role, Mbumba expressed his commitment to serving the people of Namibia wholeheartedly. He acknowledged the stability and tranquility of the country during this challenging time, attributing it to President Geingob’s visionary leadership and his instrumental role in shaping the Namibian Constitution and governance framework.
As Mbumba assumed the Office of the President, he highlighted the vacancy created in the Office of the Vice President. In this regard, he introduced Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as his second-in-command, emphasizing the importance of her role.
Prior to this announcement, Mbumba had already formed a high-level committee, led by Nandi-Ndaitwah and Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa, along with other Cabinet ministers. This committee’s primary objective is to meticulously plan and organize all the necessary arrangements before President Hage Geingob is rightfully honored as one of Namibia’s esteemed heroes.
To ensure a seamless process, this committee will collaborate closely with another committee chaired by Cabinet Secretary George Simataa, which specifically deals with government funerals. By working hand in hand, these committees aim to ensure that all aspects of the commemoration are meticulously executed, paying tribute to President Geingob’s remarkable contributions to the nation.
Yesterday, National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi emphasized the smooth and peaceful transition of power during the swearing-in ceremony. He expressed his belief that this demonstrates the effectiveness of the nation’s institutions and systems, which align with the late president Hage Geingob’s vision. Katjavivi believes that Geingob would be proud to see how his passing has been handled. However, he also admitted that he is still struggling to come to terms with Geingob’s death, as they had known each other for many years.
According to Katjavivi, it is important for Namibians to learn from the legacy that Geingob has left behind. He believes that Geingob’s commitment to the nation should serve as an inspiration for future generations.
Minister of sport, youth, and national service Agnes Tjongarero described Geingob as a passionate sportsman. She highlighted his constant desire to improve and his dedication to the development of sports in the country. Tjongarero mentioned that one of her main priorities, given by Geingob himself, was to professionalize football in Namibia. She also shared a touching anecdote about Geingob’s commitment to the national football team, even sending them a message while he was on his sickbed. This, according to Tjongarero, exemplifies Geingob’s unwavering dedication to the team and his love for sports.
The late president is being honored by the Forum of German-Speaking Namibians for his significant contributions in restoring investors’ confidence, particularly through recent funding for oil, gas, and green hydrogen projects. In addition to this, the establishment of the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board in March 2021 is recognized as a noteworthy achievement, as it serves to facilitate development and promote Namibia. Harald Hecht, the chairperson, emphasized that Geingob strived to be a president for all and encouraged all Namibians to actively participate in the progress of the nation. Hecht expressed heartfelt condolences to the first lady, Monica Geingos, the immediate family, all relatives, and the entire Namibian nation, while wishing for the late president’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
