The Zambian government has been urged by the emerald production watch of Zambia to restructure the emerald mining sector in order to give priority to Zambian mine owners and enforce the requirement for all investors to participate in local auctions.
Musa Kafimbwa, the president of the organization, emphasizes that Zambia’s mining policies have proven ineffective since gaining independence. He advocates for a fresh approach that will activate the more than 400 inactive emerald mining licenses in the country.
According to him, Zambia will persistently face losses while other nations reap the benefits of emerald mining, particularly considering that the country is poised to become the leading exporter of precious stones. This is due to recent studies revealing the depletion of Colombian deposits.
Mr. Kafimbwa expresses concern over Zambia’s persistent debt accumulation despite receiving aid from countries that exploit its resources, rather than fostering self-sufficiency within the nation.
