Emmanuel Zulu, an economist, has expressed optimism about the newly introduced online module for reporting gemstone production and export permits. He believes that this will lead to an increase in Zambia’s revenue and a boost in foreign exchange earnings.
The Zambia Revenue Authority-ZRA and the Ministry of Mines have introduced a digital platform for reporting gemstone production and obtaining export permits. This online module will make the filing of gemstone production returns and permit applications more efficient and straightforward in the sector.
During an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Zulu highlights that Zambia stands as one of the nations blessed with abundant gemstone resources. However, the sector’s potential remains largely untapped due to the lack of an effective revenue and tracking system.
The digital platform, according to him, is well-timed as it will assist in evaluating accurate statements and production levels, particularly since the nation is currently facing challenges in accurately documenting the quantities of gemstones being exported and sold through auctions outside of Zambia.
