The Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR) is urging the Zambian government to take action and increase the cultivation of arable land for food production. Currently, less than 10% of Zambia’s fertile land is being utilized for agriculture, and ZIPAR believes that local farmers should be encouraged to cultivate at least 50% of this land. By doing so, agricultural production can be significantly increased, ensuring food security for the country.
Experts are urging the government to take action and increase the cultivation of arable land for food production. Currently, out of the country’s vast arable land resource base of over 42 million hectares, only 1.5 million hectares are being cultivated annually. This underutilization of available land presents a missed opportunity to boost food production and address food security concerns. It is crucial for the government to prioritize and invest in initiatives that promote the expansion of agricultural activities on arable land to meet the growing demand for food.
Calls have been made for the government to prioritize the expansion of arable land cultivation in order to boost food production. It has been stressed that Zambia, with its abundant arable land resources, has the potential to significantly increase agricultural output and ensure food security for its population.
