The recent digital national registration exercise in Ndola had a poor response in terms of residents participating. According to Clement Chileshe, the Copperbelt Regional Passport and Citizenship Officer, only over 15,000 residents were captured during the exercise.

The implementation of the new national registration system in Ndola district had a poor response from the population. Despite a total population of 624,579 people, only 15,000 individuals were successfully registered during the system’s operation from July to October 2023, according to the 2022 Population and Housing Census.

The Department of National Registration, Passport, and Citizenship initiated a mobile mass registration campaign in July 2023 to convert national registration cards from paper-based to digital. However, the response to this campaign has been poor, with limited participation and uptake from the public.

The government will soon announce the timeline for citizens to receive their digitalized National Registration Cards (NRCs). However, for those who did not participate in the activity, they are encouraged to visit their district offices to access the ongoing exercise and obtain their digital NRCs.

The poor response to the digitalization of national registration in Ndola may lead to difficulties in accessing registration due to anticipated queues once it becomes mandatory.
