The return of Edgar Lungu to active politics has raised concerns among human rights groups. Political analyst Francis Chipili has expressed his worries about the potential increase in state-sponsored human rights violations against opposition political parties in Zambia. He also highlights the threat faced by all dissenting voices under the dictatorial tendencies of the UPND government.

Human rights groups have expressed concerns about the return of former President Edgar Lungu to active politics. While some individuals, like Mr. Chipili, believe that Lungu’s return is necessary to counter President Hakainde Hichilema’s alleged dictatorial tendencies, others do not endorse Lungu’s candidacy for the 2026 elections. They fear that Hichilema may use the police force to suppress opposition voices.

They fear that the political landscape in the country will deteriorate further, as many opposition politicians lack the courage to stand up to President Hichilema due to his leadership style.

They fear that his return could lead to a deterioration of democracy in Zambia. Mr. Chipili, however, believes that Mr. Lungu’s expertise as a former head of state could be used to unite the opposition and restore democracy in the country. Despite this, there are concerns that Mr. Lungu may face several arrests as a result of his political activities.

The return of Edgar Lungu to active politics has raised concerns among human rights groups, including activist Brebner Changala, who worry about the potential for human rights violations.

While the PF party was seen as a threat to Zambia’s constitutional democracy, there are growing concerns that the UPND government is even more dangerous. The ruling party is showing a willingness to go to extreme measures in order to hold onto power, raising alarm among human rights advocates.
