A tragic incident occurred in Northern Province, where a 49-year-old man from Chanika village in Lupososhi District lost his life in a fatal crocodile attack. The incident took place on the Lufubu river.
The incident took place during his regular fishing activities on the Lufubu river in the early hours of Monday.
According to Sub chief Chanika, other fishermen came across an empty canoe on the river, with only a cap left behind. Concerned by this discovery, they reached out to the man’s family to inquire about his whereabouts.
The local community immediately mobilized to search for the man’s body, and unfortunately, it was found that he was still trapped in the jaws of the crocodile.
The body of the victim, Mr. Kabunde, was recovered and returned to his family for burial.
Sub Chief Chanika revealed that upon examination, it was found that the man’s left hand had suffered severe injuries.
Shortly after the incident, the traditional leader reported that the crocodile was seen in the same area where the attack occurred, highlighting the urgent need for attention to prevent further loss of life.
The traditional leader of the area expressed his sadness over the recurring incidents and called for government intervention to address the issue.
Sub Chief Chanika expressed the urgent need for the deployment of Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers in the area to eliminate the reptile, which has been causing fear and distress among the local community.
As of now, the body of the victim has not been laid to rest, according to chief Chanika.
It is worth noting that a similar incident occurred last year when another individual was attacked on the same river.
