Zambia’s efforts to improve SIM card registration have resulted in the re-registration of approximately 8.2 million SIM cards that were previously improperly registered. The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has been leading the initiative to ensure that all SIM cards are properly registered and accounted for. This is an important step in promoting safety and security in the use of mobile devices in Zambia.
Out of the 10.5 million SIM cards in Zambia that were impacted, 8.2 million have been successfully re-registered.
In an effort to combat fraud and improve security, Zambia’s telecommunications regulator, ZICTA, recently conducted a re-registration of SIM cards. The audit that prompted the exercise found that scammers were using SIM cards with missing facial features, prompting the need for increased scrutiny. The re-registration effort resulted in 8.2 million SIM cards being updated with accurate information, helping to ensure the integrity of the country’s telecommunications network.
