The ongoing XXIV INCOSAI has heard that emergency situations in the world are on the increase and this calls for Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) to reduce the time they take to respond to emergency situations.
Speaking during Thematic I discussion on the role of Supreme Audit Institutions in emergency situations, the meeting heard that there was need to come up with Emergency Plans that reflect the level of competencies and skills.
Presenting theme I summary during plenary, Mr. Mauro Orefice, the President of the State Audit Court said the COVID-19 pandemic exposed SAIs on the need for SAIs to have the right skills set and competencies for them to respond timely.
He observed that this realisation was premised on the fact that some emergencies were quite technical despite staff being competent.
He added that effective communication was key in letting the public know as to what was happening on the various emergencies.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Office of the Auditor General Zambia in their response to emergencies conducted a real time Audit that informed both decision makers and the citizens on time.
