Schools under the Peace Education Zone umbrella in Lusaka have signed memorandums of understanding MOUs seen as a significant step towards institutionalizing peace education across the capital city.
This follows the successful launch of peace education in Zambia earlier this year, when the Zambia Peace Education Implementation Declaration was made by the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light HWPL and local partners to include peace education in the national public education system.
The singing ceremony held at Lusaka Girls Secondary School, brought together head teachers from across the Lusaka Central Zone.
A total of 18 schools participated, culminating in the official signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between HWPL and 11 zonal schools representing the Lusaka Central region. These schools, designated directly by the Lusaka District Education Board, play a leading role in shaping educational practices within their zones and are expected to promote the spread of peace education to schools under their jurisdiction.
The ceremony featured several key segments, beginning with a welcome address by Ms. Mirriam Chipango, Headteacher of Lusaka Girls Secondary School, followed by a congratulatory message from Mr. Alexander Mulolo, Head of the Lusaka Central Zonal Schools.
In his remarks, Mr. Mulolo stated, “By signing this MOU with HWPL, our schools in Lusaka Central are affirming our active participation in a national movement.”
He emphasized the role of schools in peacebuilding, adding, “We believe peace begins in the classroom, and we are proud to make our schools places where peace is learned, lived, and shared.”
And HWPL Branch Manager Minji Ko, reaffirmed HWPL’s commitment to supporting education-led peacebuilding in Zambia.
Meanwhile, the head teachers from the schools represented publicly pledged their commitment to peace education before proceeding with the signing of the MOUs with HWPL.
The Lusaka District Education Board had previously issued official letters expressing its support for peace education and instructing all schools within the city to implement related initiatives.
The Peace Education Zonal MOU Signing Ceremony is expected to serve as a model for other districts, showcasing how peace education can be systematically introduced through local education networks.
HWPL Peace Education, now implemented in 852 schools across 102 countries, fosters global citizens who value harmony, coexistence, and peaceful conflict resolution. With over 2,700 peace educators worldwide, the program continues to grow as a sustainable model for building a culture of peace through education.
