The Zambian government has reiterated the official mode of addressing President Hakainde Hichilema, emphasizing that he prefers to be called “Mr. President” rather than “His Excellency the President.” This directive was confirmed in a recent circular issued by the Cabinet Office, urging all government officials and members of the public to adhere to the President’s preference.

According to the circular, President Hichilema made his preference clear upon assuming office in 2021. However, it has been observed that some officials and members of the public continue to address him as “His Excellency the President,” a title he has chosen not to use.

“While appreciating this gesture as a mark of respect, please be guided that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, prefers to be addressed as ‘Mr. President’ and not ‘His Excellency the President,'” the circular states.

Additionally, despite being conferred with honorary doctorate degrees from institutions such as the Valley View University of Ghana, Heriot-Watt University of Edinburgh, and the University of Zambia, the President has made it clear that his official title remains “Mr. President.”

“We accept and cherish the honour, but the official title remains Mr. President,” Hichilema stated when receiving the honorary degrees.

The Cabinet Office has directed all ministries, provinces, government agencies, and employees to strictly adhere to this guidance, ensuring that the correct form of address is used in all official and public engagements.

This move reflects President Hichilema’s commitment to a simpler, more accessible leadership style, reinforcing his image as a servant leader rather than an exalted figure.
