Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure Development Permanent Secretary Danny Mfune says government has planned to work on the stretch between Nakonde in Muchinga and new Kapiri Mposhi in Central Province.
Mr. Mfune was briefing Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Henry Mukungule who called on him at his office in Lusaka today
Mr. Mfune disclosed that plans to upgrade the entire stretch of the Great North Road from new Kapiri Mposhi to Nakonde have been tabled with the Road Development Agency ( RDA).
He stated that the rehabilitation of the Great North Road between Chinsali and Nakonde which is currently underway will have a surplus that will be used to cover an additional 30 Kilometers stretch.
Mr Mfune said the Ministry is still consulting whether the surplus from the Chinsali- Nakonde road should be used to patch up critical portions of the road or to use it for an additional 30 Kilometer stretch.
“We are concerned with the state of the Great North Road especially between Chinsali and Serenje and we are doing everything possible to make it passable, “said Mr. Mfune.
Mr. Mfune added that his Ministry through the Ministry of Finance has approved supplementary funds to maintain the Great North road.
And Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Henry Mukungule expressed concern on the poor state of the Great North Road between Chinsali and Lavushimanda district.
He said making the stretch of the road between Chinsali and Lavushimanda passable ahead of the planned Muchinga Province Investment Forum and EXPO will be highly appreciated.
Mr. Mukungule also briefed his counterpart that construction works between the Chinsali and Nakonde road was progressing well.
He said the road works are expected to be completed by September this year and further described the works on Lot 1 of the road project being undertaken by China State Engineering Corporation at a cost of K748 million as simply superb.
Lot 2 of the road works on the stretch between Isoka and Nakonde, being done at a cost of K713 million, is being constructed by China Railway Seventh Group.
