President Hakainde Hichilema says health is one of the sectors giving government headache since his administration took over office due to massive corruption that characterized the sector in the past.

And President Hichilema has called for local production of cholera vaccines and other essential medicines to ensure availability and easy access by citizens.

Speaking during the Zambia- European Union Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Forum in Lusaka today, President Hichilema says his government is working tirelessly to ensure the sector is cleaned up and laid down procedures are followed in the procurement of drugs and medical supplies.

The head of state has also assured that government is putting in place measures to support local pharmaceutical manufacturing to strengthen healthcare delivery and availability of essential medicines in all health facilities.

At the same event, European Union-EU- Ambassador to Zambia Jacek Jankowski said a national pharmaceutical manufacturing industry would not only be a solution to the shortage of medical supplies and the assurance of functional health facilities but would be a powerful enabler for research, improving skills and job creation among others.

And World Health Organization Country Representative Nathan Bakyaita said creating a conducive environment for local pharmaceutical manufacturers will help address the shortage of medicines and increase availability of essential drugs which is a positive step in achieving universal health coverage.
